Top 20 2007: Regrets?

This week being the official Top Albums of 2008 List Week, I decided that we should take a look back at our own list from 2007 and see how it held up. I can't say I'm too disappointed by the initial look at it, but I'll break it down and leave room for Ed and Melissa to add their own thoughts if they would like.

1. Kanye West - Graduation
Mark: I still don't argue with this pick. Though I would not fight too hard if someone wanted to bump The National up here (more on that later). I still revisit this album just as much as I do his first two.
Ed: This is still hands down the best album of last year. I'll still play something off this album once a week.

2. Radiohead - In Rainbows
Mark: Honestly, I can't comment because besides a one-time through to see if I strongly disagreed with Ed/Melissa/the general hype I never gave this much play.
Ed: This album was definitely good, but it doesn't quite keep up with Kid A or OK Computer like I thought it might.

3. Chromeo - Fancy Footwork
Mark: Love the album still, but it's definitely a bit too high looking back. I would put The National, LCD Soundsystem, Justice, Band of Horses and maybe Tegan & Sara above it. I still enjoy it, but like most party jams they tend to get played out and this is strictly party jams.
Ed: I have to agree with Mark. This was a huge album, but after a year Justice is still the best dance album, making this fall a few spots.

4. The National - Boxer
Mark: Still one of my favorites, if not the favorite from this year. As I said previously, it could be higher but 4 is respectable.
Ed: I was never huge on this album, but their follow up EP wasn't bad so I can't argue either way.

5. Tegan and Sara - The Con
Mark: Same above, but I still like this spot.
Ed: Tegan and Sara belong in the top 10 and I wish they had something new on the horizion to look forward too.

6. White Williams - Smoke
Mark: Sort of in the same as Chromeo. Good, but too high.
Ed: This album might be a bit too high but I still enjoy White Williams occasionally. Between 11-20 though.

7. Justice -
Mark: This could easily be the record that bumps Chromeo down because it's a party record, but it seems to transcend that. Still being played and loved to this day, especially earlier this year.
Ed: I could argue that this is number 3 in hindsight. Justice put out a genre defining album and a lot of people missed it until recently.

8. LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
Mark: I would definitely have this album tag along with Justice in leap frogging White Williams and Chromeo. And even jump ahead of Justice too. This was one of those albums that I was just beginning to fall in love with when we originally made this list and now it stands as one of my favorites from the year.
Ed: LCD is always a good listen. I could see this being a spot or two higher, but not much more.

9. Feist - The Reminder
Mark: Not bad here. I would even put White Williams below it. The only thing below it I would think about it getting jumped by would be M.I.A. and Band of Horses.
Ed: This was a hype pick at the time. Feist was blowing up, but upon further listens, it's not a great album.

10. Jamie T - Panic Prevention
Mark: Good, but Top 10 good? I'm doubting it. This would fall now. I think it could hold onto the Top 20, but barely.
Ed: I can honestly say I haven't listened to this album since we made this list. I'm ok with that.

Dropped Out of the Top 10:
Mark: Jamie T, White Williams
Ed: Jamie T, Feist

Moved Into the Top 10:
Mark: M.I.A., Band of Horses
Ed: Band of Horses, The Shins

Albums Completely Missing From the Top 20 I'd Add:
Mark: Not really
Ed: Lupe Fiasco - The Cool (Late 2007 release date)

Check the rest of the list from 2007 here.

PS: We'll be posting a Top 20 for 2008 over the weekend. Ed and Melissa made one already (it's currently MIA from the interwebs though, so no links for you).

LCD should have been #2 on this list. And Panda Bear's Person Pitch #1
